Tony Robbins, or Tony as I call him (we’re on a first name basis - not), says that we all have six basic human needs that drive what we do.
They are:
1 - Certainty
2 - Uncertainty
3 - Significance
4 - Love
5 - Growth
6 - Contribution
According to Tony, we prioritize one or two of these human needs and that’s what really drives our behavior.
For high achievers, we tend to prioritize significance - as number one or number two.
Now - here’s the thing.
The need itself is not a bad thing, it’s how we meet the need that causes all the problems.
We can meet significance in many ways.
Some great - some horrific.
If you are significant because you are “more stressed” or “work harder” than anyone else, that’s just an easy way to burn yourself out and become extremely unfulfilled.
But as I meet more and more high achievers - I see that I am not alone in this.
And that’s a good thing, I guess.
As someone once said, the more personal the more universal.
In any event, the shift of moving from “I’m significant because I experience more pressure or stress than you do” …
To…
“I’m significant, because I don’t let any amount of pressure or stress get to me.”
Is a massive “life UX” update and upgrade.
Normalize being under pressure.
Normalize having a lot on your plate.
Who cares, it doesn’t make you special.
What makes you special is having all that on your plate and not letting it break your stride.
Be great.
